Neurological physiotherapy or neurorehabilitation is the part of physiotherapy that is aimed at the treatment of alterations due to an affectation of the central or peripheral nervous system.
Neurorehabilitation stimulates neuroplasticity, that is, it stimulates the capacity of nervous system cells to regenerate morphologically and functionally after a pathological situation, developing an adaptive response to functional demand.
The objective of this therapy will, therefore, to maximize the effect of neuroplasticity and cortical functional reorganization. For such cortical reorganization to occur, learning, acquisition and retention of specific motor tasks that condition structural changes in the brain is necessary.
The objectives and the treatment plan are specific and individualized. Therapeutic needs vary in each case, but some of the sequels that can be improved by this type of therapy are:
- Spasticity, spasms and muscle tension
- Pain
- Alterations in alignment, body scheme and postural control
- Alterations of balance, proprioception, scope, grip and manipulation
- Sensitivity alterations
- Physical disability
- Stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic)
- Craneoecephalic trauma
- Anoxia or hypoxia
- Brain tumors
- Encephalitis of various etiologies
- Alzheimer's
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
